How do I recognise a fake visa website?

In short

The High Commission of India, Dhaka keeps a list of 140 web addresses it calls fake e-Visa websites. An address containing “india”, “visa” or “gov” is not official for that reason.

In detail

The High Commission of India, Dhaka has a document on its website titled “নকল ই-ভিসা ওয়েবসাইটসমূহ” (fake e-Visa websites). It lists 140 web addresses under the heading “Fake e-Visa URL noticed so far”. The document is a scanned image, and its file name is dated 3 September 2023.

Reading the list, a few things stand out:

  • almost every address contains words like “india”, “visa”, “evisa” or “online”
  • several also have “gov” worked into the name
  • the same name appears more than once with small spelling changes, ending sometimes in .com, sometimes in .org or .in

So a name alone does not make a site official. Note the heading, too: “noticed so far”. An address missing from the list is not safe for that reason.

Our advice (this is not from the High Commission’s document):

  • Type the address yourself, or follow the link from an official source, not an advert or the first search result.
  • An Indian flag, emblem or a photo of a monument does not make a site a government site.
  • Everything on this site comes from two official sites: ivacbd.com (Indian Visa Application Centre) and hcidhaka.gov.in (High Commission of India, Dhaka).
  • If someone offers to secure an appointment or a faster visa for money, stop. What IVAC says about fees is in the question “How much is the Indian visa fee?”.
